There is the utterly deplorable Accent, which you absolutely mustn’t buy. There is also the Getz, which is a cheap runabout representing good value for money. The Coupe is a pretty sound tourer with decent though not eyebrow-raising legs, and it looks good too. It’s certainly worth a closer look. The Elantra is much like its name – an uninspiring and unremarkable family saloon, without being that bad. The Trajet MPV fails to stir any emotions whatsoever and the Tucson school-run 4x4 is entirely adequate only because it costs about £15,000.

The Sonata saloon, like the Coupe, represents an attempt by Hyundai cars to raise their game, to start being taken seriously. Since they can’t really do this by upping performance, they do it with plenty of fittings such as air con and leather as standard, and a very spacious interior. At under £16,000 it’s not to be sniffed at.

Then there is the Santa Fe, which we are amazed to report is really very good. Aimed at the ‘off-roaders which aren’t really off-roaders’ market, this Korean car with a Mexican name is well put-together and has a load of kit thrown in. The top spec V6 model is still under £19,000 whereas for the same amount of goodies, its rivals will start at over £20,000 and usually a fair bit more on top. We could say the same for the Hyundai Terracan, which is an ‘off-roader which really is an off-roader’. Both of these are exceptional value for money. If you don’t care about badges you’ll be very glad to own one.
