Young drivers must get correct car insurance, says ABI
04/02/2008
The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has urged younger motorists to make sure they purchase their own car insurance of they plan to be the main user of a parent's car.
Malcolm Tarling, a spokesperson for the organisation, said although younger drivers are not prevented from being a named person on their parents' cover, this should only be the case if they are an occasional user of the vehicle.
If they are the main user, then individual car insurance is necessary otherwise a problem could arise in the event of a claim, he added.
"[Younger drivers] are much more likely to be involved in an accident," Mr Tarling explained. "They are much more likely to claim and the claims cost a lot - I have never seen anything more expensive."
According to the Daily Telegraph, a number of car insurance providers have started to immediately reject claims submitted by those aged 17.
These include Swiftcover, Axa and More Than.
