Owners of new and used cars 'changing their habits'

07/10/2008
Drivers of new and used cars are changing the way they use their vehicles in the face of the credit crunch, according to the AA.

A spokesperson for the group said people have not necessarily stopped using their motors altogether.

He pointed out if you need a car to get to work then it becomes a necessity rather than a luxury.

"I think what we are seeing is people adopting a more efficient and money saving way of using their cars, for instance using the smaller car at weekends and combining trips," he explained.

Research by esure car insurance has found that 48 per cent of drivers in the UK are being forced to think about downscaling to one vehicle per household in a bid to combat rising motoring costs.

Meanwhile, figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders have shown new car registrations fell by 21.2 per cent in September, compared with the same month last year.
