New head unit

03 Dec 07
Car manufacturers are increasingly fitting stereo head units that are twice the height of standard systems – or double DIN size. So the big names in aftermarket ICE are following suit.Kenwood’s top-notch DNX7200 is based around a seven-inch colour touchscreen, which not only shows DVDs, but also controls the system’s many functions. As a result, there are only seven buttons on the panel, so the unit has an uncluttered look. The CD player can handle discs encoded with MP3, WMA, and Apple AAC digital music files, and has AV input and output sockets, including those for external amplifiers and sub-woofer. In addition, there’s a mini-jack input for MP3 devices and full iPod control via the adaptor supplied. As if all that wasn’t enough, the system comes with a USB flying lead socket for playing songs from a pen drive. But what makes this deck really special is that it has Garmin sat-nav built-in. Full European mapping is pre-installed, rather than running off a CD, and features include 2D/3D viewing and text-to-speech. There are thousands of points of interest and, as a bonus, map updates are simple to upload from a conventional SD card. So this comprehensive kit is a great alternative to the original equipment.
