Drivers of new and used cars 'need to wear their glasses'

26/11/2008
One in ten drivers of new and used cars have been involved in an accident or have had a near miss because they were not wearing their glasses, it has been claimed.

Research by Specsavers revealed 26 per cent of motorists have not been to see an optician since they passed their test.

Of those people, half said they believed they would fail an eye examination.

Commenting on the findings, Helen Haughton from road safety charity Brake said: "Being perceptive and alert as a driver, especially on congested roads, is crucial."

She added it is vital owners of new and used cars visit an optician on a regular basis to ensure they are not putting themselves or other drivers at risk.

These comments follow an announcement that from 2011 new EU driving licences are set to include a motorist's eyecare prescription.

Previous research by Specsavers carried out earlier this year revealed one in four drivers in Surrey cannot see well enough to be behind the wheel.
