'Don't leave valuables in your new or used car'

06/11/2008
Motorists are being advised not to leave valuables in their new and used cars as there has been an increase in thefts, an insurer has said.

According to LV=, 25 per cent of drivers in the UK have been victims of break-ins and goods of high value are regularly left inside vehicles while unattended.

The top five items stolen from cars were found to be removable stereos/radios, CDs, money/wallets, spare clothes and satellite navigation systems.

However, it was also discovered that men tend to leave a higher value of goods in their vehicle - giving thieves a potential £380 worth of swag to get their hands on.

LV= Car Insurance spokesperson Emma Holyer pointed out that motorists have a "casual attitude".

"The fact is that most car break-ins are by opportunist thieves who would probably not bother to break into the car if it looked as though it didn't contain anything to steal," she added.

Those who purchase a new or used car might find shopping around for an insurance policy yields the most suitable deal.
